How Walt Disney World Tickets Work
Walt Disney World offers an array of theme park ticket options, grouped into a program called Magic Your Way. The simplest option, visiting one theme park for one day, is called a 1-Day Base Ticket. Other features, such as the ability to visit more than one park per day (“park-hopping”), or the inclusion of admission to Disney’s minor venues (Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, DisneyQuest, mini-golf, and the like), are available as individual add-ons to the Base Ticket.
A single day’s admission to Magic Kingdom costs more than a single day at Disney’s other theme parks. An adult 1-Day Base Ticket for Magic Kingdom normally costs $111.83, while one day’s admission to any other theme park is normally $103.31 (including tax). If your plans change at the last minute, you can use your 1-Day Magic Kingdom ticket to enter the other parks. Multiday pricing is still uniform across the parks.
The more days of admission you buy, the lower the cost per day. For example, if you buy an adult 5-Day Base Ticket for $335.48 (taxes included), each day will cost $67.10, compared with $103.31 a day for a one-day pass to Epcot, the Studios, or Animal Kingdom and with for Magic Kingdom.
Tickets can be purchased from 1 up to 10 days and admit you to exactly one theme park per day; you can re-enter your chosen park as many times as you like on that day.
Disney says its tickets expire within 14 days of the first day of use. In practice, they really mean 13 days after the first day of use. If you purchase a 4-Day Base Ticket on June 1 and use it that day for admission to Magic Kingdom, you’ll be able to visit a single Disney theme park on any of your three remaining days from June 2 through June 14. After that, the ticket expires and any unused days will be lost.
Disney’s Magic Your Way Ticket Options
Navigating the Magic Your Way program is like ordering dinner à la carte at an upscale restaurant: many choices, mostly expensive, virtually all of which require some thought. Three add-on options are offered with the Magic Your Way Ticket, each at an additional cost:
Disney’s Park Hop Ticket Option
Adding the Park Hop feature to your Disney World ticket allows you to visit more than one theme park per day. The cost normally is $61.77 (including tax) on top of the price of an adult 1-Day Base Ticket to Epcot, Studios, or Animal Kingdom. Park Hopper adds $53.25 to $68.16 to the price of adult and child multiday tickets—exorbitant for one or two days, but more affordable the longer your stay.
As an add-on to a 7-Day Base Ticket, the flat fee would normally work out to $9.74 per day for park-hopping privileges. If you want to visit Magic Kingdom in the morning and eat at Epcot in the evening, this is the feature to request.
Water Parks Fun & More Option
Disney’s Water Parks Fun & More (WPFAM) option gives you a single admission to one of Disney’s water parks (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon), DisneyQuest, Oak Trail Golf Course, Fantasia Gardens or Winter Summerland mini-golf (before 4:00 pm only), or the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The cost normally is $61.68 to $68.16 (including tax), depending on the ticket purchased.
Except for the single-day WPFAM ticket, which gives you two admissions, the number of admissions equals the number of days on your ticket. If you buy an 8-Day Base Ticket, for example, and add the WPFAM option, you get eight WPFAM admissions.
What you can’t do is, say, buy a 10-Day Base Ticket with only three WPFAM admissions or a 3-Day Base Ticket with 4 WPFAM admissions. Here’s a tip: You can skip WPFAM entirely and buy an individual admission to any of these minor parks—that’s almost always the best deal if you want to visit only one of the venues above.
Disney also offers a Park Hopper–WPFAM combo add-on for $89.37 to $95.85 (including tax), depending on the ticket purchased. If you plan to spend a lot of time at the water parks and other WPFAM venues, the combo will save you $25.56 to $40.47, depending on the number of days, over buying the two options separately.

Other Places to Buy Discounted Tickets
You can buy your admission passes on arrival at Walt Disney World or purchase them in advance. Admission passes are available at Walt Disney World resorts and theme parks. Passes are also available at some non-Disney hotels and shopping centers, as well as through independent ticket brokers. Because Disney admission prices are only marginally discounted in the Walt Disney World–Orlando area, the chief reason for you to purchase from an independent broker is convenience and because they’re cheaper. Offers of free or heavily discounted tickets abound, but they generally require you to attend a time-share sales presentation.
If you’re trying to keep costs to an absolute minimum, consider using an online ticket wholesaler, such as the Official Ticket Center, Kissimmee Guest Services, Maple Leaf Tickets, or Undercover Tourist, especially for trips with five or more days in the theme parks. All tickets sold are brand-new, and the savings can range from $3 to more than $80, depending on the ticket and options chosen. We’ve spoken with representatives from each company, and they’re well versed in the pros and cons of the various tickets and options. If an option doesn’t make sense for your specific vacation plans, the reps will tell you so.
All four companies offer discounts on tickets for almost all Central Florida attractions, including Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, and Cirque du Soleil. Discounts for the major theme parks range from about 7% to 10%. Tickets for other attractions are more deeply discounted.
Undercover Tourist (U.S.: (800) 846-1302; Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Eastern time; fax +1 386-252-3469) offers free delivery but unlike the other companies, doesn’t have an office near Walt Disney World. That means you’ll need to have your tickets delivered to your house, or pick them up at a UPS office in Orlando. (You’ll call Undercover Tourist’s toll-free number if something is wrong with your tickets).
The Official Ticket Center (3148 Vineland Rd., Kissimmee; daily, 8 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Eastern time; (407) 396-9020 or (877) 406-4836; fax (407) 396-9323) has had some of biggest discounts available on Disney World tickets recently, even more than Undercover Tourist. The Official Ticket Center offers USPS certified mail for free or U.S. Priority Mail for $8. For $10 they’ll also deliver to Orlando-area hotels; it’s of course free if you pick up at their office.
Kissimmee Guest Services (950 Celebration Blvd., Suite H, Celebration; (321) 939-2057; Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday, 8 a.m.–noon, all Eastern time) offers free ticket delivery to Orlando-area hotels for tickets ordered over the phone, but tickets ordered online are cheaper.
Maple Leaf Tickets (4647 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy. [US 192], Kissimmee; daily, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Eastern time; (407) 396-0300 or 800-841-2837; fax 407-396-4127; mapleleaftickets .com) offers the same deal on pickup at their store and for $6.95 delivery to Orlando-area hotels; U.S. Priority Mail service is a flat $6.95 per order.
MyMagic+. Magic Bands, My Disney Experience and FastPass+
MyMagic+ entails the following new guest features:
- A new website and mobile app called My Disney Experience, which provides a one-stop shop for all things Walt Disney World throughout every phase of a guest’s vacation. It will enable guests to:
- Get more information on all Walt Disney World Resort has to offer, from resort hotels and attractions to dining and merchandise.
- Design the overall experience they want, planning as much or as little as they wish.
- Make dining and other reservations and FastPass+ selections.
- Connect with family and friends to coordinate plans and share photos.
- Disney FastPass+ service. Guests will be able to select FastPass+ attractions and entertainment experiences through My Disney Experience before they leave home and make changes on the go.
- For the first time, guests will be able to reserve firework and parade viewing areas, shows, Disney Character Greetings and more, in addition to their favorite attractions.
- For guests who don’t know where to start, Disney will recommend FastPicks — “a set of three FastPass+ selections that serve as a starting point” — and give guests the option to customize their selections.
- Disney FastPass+ service is included with Theme Park admission.
- MagicBands. Wrist band that connects all the vacation choices guests make online with My Disney Experience. Guests can use their MagicBand to enter their Disney Resort hotel room, buy food and merchandise, and enter Walt Disney World theme parks and water parks. Plus, the MagicBand provides FastPass+ access to all the experiences selected and serves as the connection to Disney’s PhotoPass.
Magic Bands
Worn on the wrist, the colorful MagicBand is an all‐in-one device that connects all the vacation choices you make online with My Disney Experience.
You can use a MagicBand to enter a Disney Resort hotel room, buy food and merchandise, and enter Walt Disney World theme parks and water parks. Plus, the MagicBand provides FastPass+ access to all the experiences selected and serves as the connection to Disney’s PhotoPass.
Because you can wear your MagicBand on your wrist, you do not have to rummage around in a bag or your pockets for your tickets or credit cards. The bands allow you to travel lighter throughout your vacation.
MagicBands are flexible plastic wristbands, resembling a watch or bracelet. They come in a variety of colors: pink, blue, red, green, orange, gray and yellow. You can choose which color you prefer when you are initially ordering them in your My Disney Experience (MDE) account.
Connection to My Disney Experience
Your MagicBand is linked to your My Disney Experience account and holds all the information relating to your vacation: your hotel and dining reservations, Fastpass+ experiences, PhotoPass photos. Your MagicBand can also act as your Disney resort room key. Also, if you wish, you can link a debit or credit card to your MagicBand so that you can use it to pay for your purchases.
To use the MagicBand to enter a theme park or water park, or to take advantage of your FastPass+, touch the Mickey head on the band to the Mickey symbol you’ll find at the turnstile touch-points. When entering the park, you will also be required to place a finger on a scanner. When the light on Mickey head turns green, you can enter the park.
Getting a Magic Band
If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel, you can customize and order your MagicBands online at least 10 days before your arrival at Walt Disney World Resort:
- Create or sign into your Disney account.
- If you have not already done so, link your reservation number to your Disney account.
- Customize your MagicBands here.
If you don’t have time to order your MagicBands before your vacation, you may be able to obtain them once you arrive at your hotel, but you may not have your choice of color.
If you are not staying at a Disney resort hotel, Disney considers you to be a “day guest.” MagicBands are not automatically shipped to you when you purchase your tickets, however you may purchase MagicBands at merchandise locations once your arrive at Walt Disney World.
NOTE: The “touch to pay” option (which entails linking a credit or debit card to the MagicBand) is not available for day guests.
FastPass+ Basics
FastPass+ is the new version of Disney’s innovative system designed to reduce long waits at attractions.
The original FastPass was introduced in 1999. It was essentially a timed ticket that allowed you to spend your time elsewhere instead of waiting in line. You returned to the attraction or show at the times stated on your FastPass to bypass the standby line.
In 2013, Walt Disney World began rolling out the new “FastPass+” service. With FastPass+, Disney resort guests can select three FastPass+ attractions and/or entertainment experiences per day (all in the same park) through the My Disney Experience website and mobile app. This can be done before leaving home, or after you’ve arrived at Walt Disney World, and you can make changes on the go. You are able to reserve firework and parade viewing areas, shows, Disney character greetings and more, in addition to favorite attractions.
For guests who don’t know where to start, Disney recommends FastPicks — a set of three FastPass+ selections that serve as a starting point — and give guests the option to customize their selections. Disney’s FastPass+ service is included with theme park admission.
Using FastPass+
All park guests — including those staying at Disney resorts, passholders AND day guests using Magic Bands or Magic Your Way passes, can use FastPass+ without an additional fee. However, only Disney resort guests who already have purchased and registered their tickets can schedule FastPass+ times using the My Disney Experience (MDE) website or mobile app up to 60 days in advance of their visit to the parks. Offsite guests (day guests) and passholders can schedule FastPass+ times 30 days in advance of their visit, using either MDE or the in-park FastPass+ kiosks.
FastPass+ is essentially a “virtual” queuing system — guests using FastPass+ are entered into a virtual queue at an attraction that saves their space in line.
To obtain FastPass+ using the My Disney Experience website or mobile app:
- Log in to your MDE account.
- Make sure your park tickets are linked to your account.
- Once logged in, hover the cursor over the MY DISNEY EXPERIENCE link on the right side of the top navigation bar.
- Under the heading Plan and Manage, select FastPass+:
Select the day you want to make plans for. - Select Make your FP+ Selections.
Select the members of your party you will be making plans for.
Select the park you will be visiting. - Select up to three preferences. All must be in the same park. (Important note: In Epcot and Hollywood Studios you Select ONE Attraction from Tier 1 and then up to two in Tier 2.)
If you don’t reserve any FastPass+ options prior to coming to the parks, you can also do it once you are there. First, if you have a paper ticket you must exchange it for a plastic card ticket with an RFID chip. Next, go to a Go to a FastPass+ kiosk (a castmember should be able to direct you to one). If you do not already have a My Disney Experience account set up, at the kiosk you will first ADD each person’s ticket info and their names. You will save a lot of time by setting up your account and linking the tickets in advance! After entering the information for each member of your party, pick three FastPass+ attractions and times for the day. Each person can select different options later if desired, but you need to select options as a group first.
Important Note:
You CAN use a Third-Party Ticket with Magic Bands and the My Disney Experience (MDX) app. Once you’ve received the tickets, you can manually add them to your MagicBand via the My Disney Experience website. This works for almost all tickets purchased through third party vendors such as Undercover Tourist and The Official Ticket Center. On the My Disney Experience site, go to “My Reservations,” scroll down until you see “Link Tickets,” and follow the steps from there.
